Issue #79 – Monday, September 18, 2017

Remember high school?

Was it all prom king/queen and football/cheerleading for you? Were you class president? Or were you more of a geek in the back row with your thick glasses and pocket protector?

And where are you now? Have all your hopes and dreams come true?

I’m thinking back to my highschool days because Mary Morrissey and I went to school together, all those many years ago. (And if you don’t know who Mary is, definitely read on, because she’s amazing...

...and one of the most influential and powerful people I know!)

Mary and I both experienced many struggles on our journeys to success. At times, no one believed in either of us.

Worse: There were times when we didn’t believe in ourselves.

But we both learned how to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles – real and imagined – and have gained invaluable lessons along the way.

Today, we are both living the lives of our dreams and we’ve dedicated our lives to helping other people create…

...the same dramatic transformations we’ve enjoyed in our finances, relationships, health, careers and more.

In this issue of Mind Power, I’ve invited Mary to contribute a feature article, called, “Is it Selfish to Pursue Your Dreams?”. This is so powerful because…

...one of the deep-seeded and limiting beliefs you may have is that your dreams are selfish (or that you don’t deserve them).

So please, read this article right away. Mary has an uncanny knack for cutting straight to the heart of the matter…

...and changing lives in the process.

Be well.

Is it Selfish to Pursue Your Dreams?

by Mary Morrissey

Have you ever wondered if it’s selfish to pursue your dreams?

The answer to this question is: It depends! It CAN be selfish to pursue your dream, if your dream is only about you.

But most dreams, even the ones that may seem selfish to you, actually DO benefit the world around you!

Let me explain:

After investing the last 40+ years studying the spiritual side of success, and the last 30+ years coaching tens of thousands of people in the art and science of transformation, I’ve found that every single person has a “hidden” longing — a deep yearning — to live a life that they truly love…

And this is by design!

We Live in an Upward Spiral Universe

This power called Life that moves through all things is ever-seeking to expand around you and through you.

In the Talmud, it says, “Every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, ‘Grow, grow, grow!’” That little blade of grass will press through cement, seeking the light.

Each one of us is a growth-seeking being by design. When we move in the direction of what we would love, and we learn and grow and stretch ourselves, this gives us LIFE.

When we close ourselves off from opportunities for personal growth and self-development, and we stay stuck or stagnant, this is where dissatisfaction and unfulfillment come from.

But it’s always your choice.

You Have Been Given Dominion over Creating
Your Own Experience of Life

Because here’s the truth: Keep breathing, and you will create results. You don’t get to NOT create.

If you decide to stay in bed all day with the covers over your head, you create a day of being in bed with the covers over your head! You are always creating SOMETHING with your energy, your intentions and your actions, but you have a choice.

You can create consciously or unconsciously, by design or by default.

If you’re going to be creating anyway, why not create what it is that you would love?

So it’s perfectly natural, it’s actually in harmony with your being, for you to want to seek out opportunities for personal growth and self-development, and to expand and pursue your passions, interests, and goals.

Many of us have thought, “Well, if I could just be perfect enough, my life would be great, and I’d feel happy.” But perfection is not the secret to happiness…

Leaning into Opportunities for GROWTH is
the Secret to Happiness

Dreams are images that you have of your life in a more expanded state.

They are visions of what your life would look like if you experienced more expansion in the areas of your health, or your relationships, or what you do with your time and talents, or the kind of time and money freedom that you would like to have.

As you pursue your dreams, not only do you begin to generate extraordinary results, your sense of aliveness grows…and this aliveness ripples out into the world around you.

Others notice it, and they feel inspired to pursue their own personal growth, self-development, goals and dreams.

In this way, each of us, following our dreams, can transform the world.

When it comes to you and your dreams, ask yourself, “What positive benefit would this dream coming true have for the people around me… my family, my friends, my community?”

Even if your dream is to find the love of your life, and you think, “Oh, my gosh. That’s kind of a selfish dream, because that’s just about me having the love of my life!” Consider this…

If you’ve ever walked down the street and you see an older couple shuffling along, but holding hands, and you feel the love between them… or you see that young couple sitting by the beach and they’re snuggled up, and you can feel the love between them…

Or you see two middle-aged people walking through a grocery store and laughing and joking, and buying something for their meal that night, and the love between them is palpable.

Any Time Two People Presence Love, it’s a
Blessing to Anyone Who Witnesses it

So actually, it’s FAR from selfish to pursue your dreams.

You following your dreams actually helps all of us. The increased sense of aliveness you feel and express when you’re living a life you truly love inspires others around you to do the same. And in this way, the entire world changes.

Issue #78– Monday, September 11, 2017

There’s been a lot of talk over the years about higher consciousness, Presence, self-actualization and a ton of other New Thought lingo.

Well, talk is cheap.

Anyone who know me knows that I’m not about talk...I’m all about action (and, yes, above all, awareness).

Because it’s not enough to just think your way happy, or successful or into Nirvana. In fact, I would say thinking is often counterproductive to all these things.

Which is why, when I head Dr. Mark Atkinson speak, I was immediately impressed with his practical approach to – yes, I’ll say it – higher consciousness.

He offers valuable tools that can get you over the hump and shift you UP into a higher state...in minutes!

This isn’t hype. Try it for yourself. Dr. Atkinson shares one of these powerful tools in the feature article below. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it. And DO IT.

Change comes when you act.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

How to Shift Up Into Higher Conciousness

by Dr. Mark Atkinson

Integrative Physician, Personal Development Teacher
& Bulletproof Medical Director

As you go about your day, are you consciously shifting the gears of your state of consciousness so that you can feel your best, perform your best and meet the needs of the present moment?

Alternatively, like most people – is the way you feel, determined not consciously by you, but by your psychological conditioning, habits, compromised biology and environment?

You have complete control over your state of consciousness – your identity, experience and worldview.

Learning how to shift into higher-functioning states is a foundational practice for those who are committed to being and becoming the best version of themselves. It’s a game-changer.

As you learn to shift up into higher states, you feel more empowered, alive, connected and resilient. You start to notice the moments in which you start to drift down into tense, closed lower-functioning states (think blame, shame, worry, resentment, drama, defensiveness and gossip), you smile on the inside and you SHIFT UP.

And as you practice this repeatedly, you realize that you are the CEO of your State of Consciousness.

In our coach training program, we teach our students how to be the CEO, to Shift Up. One of the practices we use is called Slow Thought Defusion. It works, and works quickly.

Using this practice will not only help you shift up into the state of high-performance, Presence, but when used consistently it has the potential to deepen and accelerate your journey towards self-actualization and self-transcendence.

Don’t believe me, find out for yourself.

Slow Thought Defusion

Think of a situation that you are feeling stressed about. Notice the thoughts that you are having about that situation and find a short sentence that encapsulates the essence of what it is that you are stressed about…

...for example ‘there is no way I’ll get this work done on time’. Now do the following:

The attitude you need for this is light-heartedness, no effort or trying and do it with a ‘smile’ on the inside. How you do it is the key to receiving its benefit.

Drop your focus into the lower part of your abdomen (just a couple of centimetres below your navel) and keep your attention their throughout.

Now say the sentence very slowly and out loud, (if you are in a public place you can do it in your head – but it is even better if done out loud). There should be at least five seconds gap between each word.

As you do this breath gently and THIS IS THE KEY keep your attention on the SPACE in between each thought.

If you notice your mind trying to rush things (which it tends to do!) just allow an even longer gap between each word.

Now repeat this whole process two more times and having done so, notice what has shifted in your experience. How do you feel? How do you now feel about the ‘problem’?

90% of the time, when people use slow thought defusion, an extraordinary thing happens – they shift from identifying with a stressful thought (ego) to experiencing a sense of balance, spaciousness and calm – Presence.

Notice how when you are aligned with the higher functioning state of Presence it transforms the way you feel and transforms your perspective on whatever the original situation or issue was.

Notice a sense of freedom around the issue. If you choose to do so and whilst resting in Presence ask yourself this question:

What do I need to do to address this issue (whatever the stressful issue was)?

More often than not one of two responses will arise, either the ‘problem/issue’ is no longer a problem/issue or you’ll just know how to deal with it in a practical, balanced and efficient way.

The truth is this – we were never supposed to believe everything we think. Thoughts are simply thoughtforms arising in awareness. One of the fundamental skills for conscious living and personal development is choosing what to believe and what not to.

If the thought empowers you, makes a you a kinder, better human being by all means use that thought to fuel and energize you. But, if the thought is using you and diminishing you, your effectiveness, your happiness, then shift out of it. It really is okay to do that.

What’s more, as you start to live in alignment with Presence, life starts to unfold in extraordinary and often unexpected ways – it’s one of the master keys to living a deeply fulfilling life.

Enjoy. Be Free.

Expand Into Your Greatest Self

Issue #77 – Monday, September 4 2017

Through the Hubble telescope, we can see that the Universe is not a stagnant thing. It is expanding, evolving, ever changing and growing.

And so are you.

Unless you dig your heels in and resist it – typically from fear of change or comfort of the familiar – your nature is to expand, evolve, change and grow.

I’ve invited my friend, Christy Whitman, to contribute a truly inspiring article in this week’s issue of Mind Power, because she knows a little something about the phenomenon of natural expansion…

...as it relates to personal growth and stepping into your greatest self.

“Living in an ever-expanding universe means that new energies, new possibilities and new desires are always moving through us,” says Christy.

Christy also reveals the ONE FACTOR that calls us to be more than we are today, that, as she says, “holds us in the light of our highest vision of ourselves.”

So, if you’re feeling stagnant in your life, or spinning your wheels without getting anywhere…

...I heartily encourage you to read Christy’s article. It’s very powerful.

So read on, and let Christy help you squash the voices of fear and doubt that are holding you back from your highest, best self.

Be well.

Expand Into Your Greatest Self

“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world as in being able to remake ourselves.”

~Mahatma Gandhi

Nearly a hundred years ago, astronomer Edwin Hubble made the discovery that the universe we live in is not static, but rather exists in a continual state of expansion.

And because we as human beings are an inseparable part of the rapidly expanding universe in which we are born…

...we, too, are constantly being called to expand.

The difference between us as individuals and the universe in which we live is that the universe has no choice about whether it will expand – it simply expands.

But because we are born with the gift of free will, we have the ability to allow ourselves to expand, to identify the next version of ourselves that is longing to be expressed, and to consciously align with that expansion.

And, because we have free will, we also have the power to resist, block or sabotage that expansion, whether consciously or unconsciously.

No matter what your current reality right now, whether you’re just barely surviving or you are content and thriving in most areas of your life…

...there is always another level of happiness, fulfillment, and self-expression that is available to you.

When you cooperate with that expansion, meaning you embrace rather than suppress, resist or deny whatever life is causing you to desire, you feel eager, passionate, engaged, and alive.

And when you don’t give yourself permission to cooperate with the evolution of your own desire – either because you doubt your ability to achieve it or because you don’t believe yourself worthy of receiving it…

...your experience of life becomes one of hopelessness, despair, and resignation.

So, what is it that determines which path we as individuals take? What causes someone to harness the power of their own free will to stop allowing fear, doubt and limiting beliefs to block their expansion…

...and to actively seek to become all that they can be?

I have observed, both in my own life and in the lives of thousands of people whom I have coached over the last twenty years, that there is one factor that consistently has the ability to call us forward…

...to inspire us to cooperate with our own expansion, and to support us in stepping into the next evolution of ourselves.

That factor is the presence a coach who holds us in the light of our highest vision of ourselves.

Whenever we find ourselves stuck in a rut, stagnating on an important goal, or just not feeling as content or inspired as we’d like, it’s important to acknowledge the underlying reasons for that.

We all know that change can be scary. It’s our human nature to cling to what is familiar and known, even when it no longer serves or inspires us. In order to view our expansion as a gift rather than a threat…

...we need a solid support structure around us that allows us to see ourselves as our full potential and find the confidence to continually ask for and receive more.

I can look back at every major turning point in my life – whether it was my decision to leave my first marriage, to indulge my interest in learning about the spiritual laws that underlie everything in the manifest universe, or to leave my career in corporate America to pursue my passion…

...I can honestly say that I would never have been able to effect these changes in myself if it were not for the presence of a great support system.

I have had a coach (and at times a combination of many coaches) every step of the way. Thanks to their clarity, accountability and commitment to holding me to my highest vision…

...my life continues to be one joyful process of expansion after another.

Today I train and certify coaches because I know the value of this type of support, and I also know how difficult it to make lasting change without it.

Living in an ever-expanding universe means that new energies, new possibilities and new desires are always moving through us. We have two choices – to cooperate with this process or to resist it.

When the voices of doubt come up, having a support structure in place helps us to align ourselves with that which is in the process of becoming.

A coach who helps us to update and expand our vision of ourselves is like consciously creating a bigger container for the new energy to flow into. This vision allows us cooperate with this new energy as it is manifesting – or, at the very least, to not get in the way of it.

When you make the choice to let Life have you – to go with the flow, to allow your desires, and to cooperate rather than resist your own expansion…

...you open the door to the new version of yourself that is waiting to be revealed.

Your greatest self is not something that needs to be created. It’s not something you need to strive for. It’s simply something that you acknowledge and claim for yourself.

Your greatest self already exists within you, and is just waiting to be discovered. A good coach will show how to access it.

Mind Power Issue #76

You’re Responsible...and (therefore) Powerful

If someone has shared Mind Power with you, click here to subscribe.

Issue #76 – Monday, August 28, 2017

You can live in a world where other people or events “cause” you to feel the way you feel, or act the way you act. But there is a price to doing that.

Really, what benefit does anger, resentment or jealousy offer you? The gift of being right? The freedom from doing something about it?

The juicy feeling of self righteous indignation?

In this issue of Mind Power, I’m going to talk about the tremendous, destructive habit of blame and how…

...taking responsibility for everything – yes, everything – that happens in your life will lead you to greater peace, fulfillment and success.

I’ll explain the Three Levels of Responsibility that will help you let go of blame, resentments and victimhood...

...find the way to happiness, inner peace and a productive life.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

Own it!
Empower Yourself through

Personal Responsibility

by Bill Harris

Taking personal responsibility is not about blame but rather about personal power. If someone or something outside of you is the cause of your feelings or behavior, you are powerless—a victim.

If you or at least your unconscious processes are the cause, then you can exercise some choice in creating your feelings and behaviors. People or events may be a stimulus…

...but your response comes from you, either consciously or unconsciously.

Until you realize that you create your experience of your world, including all happiness and all suffering, you will be controlled by…

...and at the whim of, whatever is happening around you.

Your only chance for happiness will be to find perfect circumstances and to find a way to keep them that way. How likely is that?

Choose How You Respond

The truth is, you are responsible for every feeling or behavior you have, in the sense that it is either how you choose to respond to something that happens or an…

...automatic unconscious response based on the way your internal map of reality has been structured.

You can live in a world where you think other people or events cause you to feel the way you feel, but you live in that world at a price. The price is feeling bad a great deal of the time.

When you take total responsibility for every feeling and behavior you have, you can choose to feel good or to behave in a way that has the greatest chance of having a good outcome.

There are three levels to what I’m talking about:

Level 1

The lowest level is living in your mind, where your mind is automatically and unconsciously creating a hallucination you believe to be reality. At this level, you are unconscious about how your mind creates what happens. This is where most people are.

Level 2

The second level is one where you’re still creating a hallucination, but at least it’s the hallucination you intend to create. You may or may not realize it’s a hallucination because you aren’t yet aware of the third level.

Level 3

In the third level, you’re not taking the internal map created by the mind to be reality, and you realize that this map involves pretending that there are separate things and separate events, that there is a separate you that does things to other separate things.

In the third level, you see the creations of the mind for what they really are—conceptual rather than real.

Level 1 Responsibility

When you let your mind run on automatic, it creates exactly what it has been set up to create by your past experiences. You feel like a victim. Life seems to happen to you.

Your feelings just happen to you, your behaviors seem to just happen, and your results seem to just happen.

This means that the creative process is going on under the surface, outside your awareness, and since you can’t see it, it seems as if what is going on around you causes what is happening.

Blame

An important side issue of Level 1 responsibility is that people confuse responsibility with blame. If I say, “you are responsible for what is happening to you” some people translate that as “you are to blame for what is happening to you.”

Blame belongs to the world of black and white, right and wrong, “me” and “not me”. People who are concerned about not being blamed almost always have been abused or traumatized in some way.

They feel like victims, and they want someone to blame—and they certainly don’t want it to be them. Because of their abuse, they strongly focus on what they do not want...

...and one of the things they do not want is to be blamed, to be wrong.

Responsibility

Begin by accepting this main premise: you are responsible for the feelings and behaviors you have—even if you cannot directly see how you are creating them.

Most feelings and behaviors are conditioned responses, and your internal map of reality unconsciously tells you to feel or behave in a certain manner when you are stimulated in a certain way.

Perhaps when your father yelled at you as a child, you felt afraid, then angry.

Once this has been set up as a conditioned response, like Pavlov's dogs salivating when they heard the bell announcing dinner, someone yelling at you will cause you to become afraid and then angry…

...and then you’ll react in a certain, preconditioned way.

It seems as if these emotions are caused by the yelling. They are not. They are triggered by the yelling, but they are caused by the conditioned response set up by your past, in your internal map of reality.

Change the parts of your internal map of reality that created this response and you have a completely different feeling…

...followed by a completely different behavior.

Cause vs. Trigger

What is the difference between a cause that leads to a response and a trigger that leads to a response?

If there is more than one possible response, if different people respond in different ways to the same stimulus, the stimulus is a trigger.

If there is only one possible response, the stimulus is a cause.

Pouring water over your head makes your head wet. The water causes the wetness. Everyone who has the water poured over his or her head will get wet.

Yelling at someone could cause anger, laughter, disinterest, puzzlement, fear, or any number of other reactions. Yelling is a trigger, not a cause.

Even though yelling may result in some sort of uninvited feeling, just knowing that it is triggering your response…

...is a start in taking responsibility for what is happening.

This is level 2, where you begin the process of changing your internal map of reality so you can make different choices.

Level 2 Responsibility

You can move from Level 1 to Level 2 so that what happens to you is a choice rather than an automatic response…

...you have to take responsibility for what you create and acknowledge the states you experience.

The way you experience what happens around you depends on what you do inside your head.

Your goal is to choose your response to each event.

Choose what is most resourceful for you, what makes you happiest, most peaceful, and most successful. As long as your response is automatic, you are at the whim of events and people around you.

It is only when you acknowledge that every feeling and every behavior is coming from you, that you will make progress toward this goal.

Choosing how to feel, the state you are in, and how you behave in the most resourceful way possible are major components of freedom.

This is a goal very worth working toward.

Holosync® meditation technology can be the best shortcut to becoming increasingly conscious. As you use this soundwave technology, your conscious awareness increases so you…

...know what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Victimhood

Our culture has popularized victimhood over the past several decades. No one is responsible for anything that happens to them. There’s an underlying belief that taking responsibility…

...would be onerous, difficult, a struggle, or just too much work.

The truth is – without exception – being a victim is onerous, difficult, a struggle, and too much work. Being responsible for everything that happens, for every feeling and behavior…

...is the easy way to live because it is the way to happiness, inner peace, and a productive life.

It is the surefire way to end all the dramas in your life.

When you take responsibility for the fact that you can operate your internal processing any way you want, and create nearly any outcome you want, you gain control over your life.

Level 3 Responsibility

In order to take responsibility for what you create, you have to start with the premise that there is a separate you who creates your reality…

...and ultimately that isn’t true.

The separate you is a hallucination created by the mind, which chops things up into separate things and separate events…

...including the idea of a separate you. When you are responsible at this level, you step out of the world of the mind.

And that’s a very powerful place to be.

Editor’s Note: In the next issue of Mind Power, Bill will dig deeper into this idea of “a separate you,” and discuss…

...a fascinating phenomenon called The Double Bind (in your inbox next Monday).

Issue #75 – Monday, August 21, 2017

This is very special issue of Mind Power on an unexpected, and personal, topic. On Tuesday, July 25, 2017, brain scientist and plasticity pioneer, Dr. Marian Diamond, passed away at the age of 90.

Dr. Diamond’s work had a profound effect on my own research and understanding of how to change your brain…

...and therefore change your life, for the better, in ways previously unheard of.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read about her amazing research – and her equally amazing life – in the feature article below.

You will also pick up some vital insights into your own longevity and how to keep your brain vital and strong as you age.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

Dr. Marian Diamond (1926 - 2017)
Goodbye to an Amazing Woman,
Scientist & Inspiration

by Bill Harris

At the age of 15, she saw a human brain for the first time and wondered how a three-pound lump of grey matter could conjure thoughts and ideas, and to be, in her estimation…

…”the most magnificent structure on this earth.”

This moment led Dr. Marian Diamond to the gates of such esteemed halls as UC Berkeley, Harvard and Cornell Universities. And from there, to breakthrough research in the science of the brain…

...and its ability to change its structure over time.

Among her many achievements was to dispel the notion that mental capacity is fixed at birth and is doomed to diminish drastically with age.

Her research with laboratory rats demonstrated that an enriched environment changed the anatomy of the brain. The implication was that the brains of all animals, including humans….

...benefit from an enriched environment, and that impoverished environments can lower the capacity to learn.

This is the woman who held pieces of Albert Einstein's brain in her hands, and put those same pieces under a microscope and the laser-sharp focus of her mind.

Diamond’s first evidence (which she later proved in laboratory rats) that the brain can change with experience and improve with enrichment

...began with the brain of Albert Einstein.

In 2016, filmmakers Catherine Ryan and Gary Weimberg released an award-winning documentary of Marian’s life: My Love Affair with the Brain: The Life and Science of Dr. Marian Diamond.

“How can you not fall in love with a woman who carries around a preserved human brain inside a giant flowery hat box?” they ask.

“As one of the founders of modern neuroscience,” say the filmmakers, “it’s no exaggeration to say that…

...Dr. Diamond changed science, and society at large in dramatic ways over the course of her career.

“Her groundbreaking work is all the more remarkable because it began during an era when so few women entered science at all.

“Shouted at from the back of the conference hall by noteworthy male academics as she presented her research, and disparaged in the scientific journals of a more conservative era…

“...Dr. Diamond simply did the work and followed where her curiosity led her, bringing about a paradigm shift (or two) in the process.

As she points out, “in order to get to the answers that matter, you have to start by asking the right questions.”

The giant leap that Dr. Diamond provided for our understanding of the brain, includes things you may be very surprised to hear about. She concluded that five factors...

...out of the millions of possibilities, were crucial to brain development at any age:

  1. Diet
  2. Exercise
  3. Challenge
  4. Newness
  5. Love

Yes, love. Dr. Diamond illustrated that laboratory rats, and by extrapolation, humans, who were petted and snuggled, had thicker cerebral cortices, and…

... performed better and lived longer...than those who were not given comfort and affection.

The same held true for rats who lived in “enriched environments” with toys and rat playmates. While critics were scoffing at Dr. Diamond’s experiments, she forged ahead undaunted…

...and eventually tipped the science of the brain on its head.

In My Love Affair with the Brain: The Life and Science of Dr. Marian Diamond, Dr. Diamond, taking a brain from the Tupperware container inside her hatbox, says:

“It’s a full human brain that you can hold in one hand. Nothing can compare with it. Those cells can produce ideas.

“This is who you really are. Take away the brain and you take away the person.”

Charming, witty and brilliant, Dr. Diamond’s YouTube videos have made her the one of the most popular college professors in the world.

“I’ve spent more than 60 years studying the brain...and it was pure joy.”

Her colleague at UC Berkeley, George Brooks, a professor of integrative biology, said:

“Her research demonstrated the impact of enrichment on brain development — a simple but powerful new understanding that has literally changed the world…

“...from how we think about ourselves to how we raise our children.

“Dr. Diamond showed anatomically, for the first time, what we now call plasticity of the brain. In doing so…

...she shattered the old paradigm of understanding the brain as a static and unchangeable entity that simply degenerated as we age.”

Diamond was not only a pioneer in neuroscience and anatomical and behavioral research. Hatbox in hand, she became an inspiration and mentor to generations of students.

Without Dr. Diamond’s courage and perseverance in a field dominated by scowling and skeptical men, my own discoveries in brain plasticity would have remained on the kitchen table…

...where I first conceived the idea for Holosync® and the technology that grew into all that Centerpointe is today. (And, by the way, Holosync® provides a wonderful “enriched environment” for the brain.)

Marian Diamond is a bright, shining example of all that can come from a simple idea. As she said “...start by asking the right questions.”

I’ve often said, in encouraging people toward awareness, to “observe with curiosity. Question everything.”

For example, you never know what you’ll find in a woman’s hatbox.

“I lost my partner of only 18 months in June. He just missed his 80th and I got there a couple of years ago. But the subtle thing which hit me to-day was the sadness I was holding onto.

“I had found some shots on his laptop which were taken only a few years ago, and there was one particular one in which he looked thoughtful, sad even, and I had chosen to print it out and have it on the desk because it matched what I felt.

“Your letter made me think about that. I went straight back to his computer and printed out another of him with his young granddaughter. There was an expression of love in his face, but also humour.

“I changed it over and immediately my mood changed. Of course he had different emotions, as we all do, and mine are pretty raw just now, but that change has helped me enormously to-day, and whenever I see his expression of love and fun, I realise how lucky I was to know him, even for such a short time.

“It was a complete example of what I had been doing, holding onto the sadness, and then watching myself let it go.

“Thank you Bill.”

Beyond Belief

Issue #74 – Monday, August 14, 2017

Is there a difference between what you believe is true and what is really true?

Come to think of it: Are there varying degrees of truth? Or is Truth absolute? Does truth depend on what you believe about life, about yourself, about others?

In this issue of Mind Power, we’re going beyond belief to turn over some rocks, shine a light into the shadows, and discover…

...what’s really happening in that brain of yours that has the most powerful impact on your future.

We’ll ask some mind-bending questions and explore some practical solutions that will help you understand reality on a more resourceful way, so you can better navigate the “reality” you’re in, and …

...create the reality of your dreams.

Be well.

Beyond Belief:
How to Harness the Power of Your Brain

by Bill Harris

What is reality?

  • My thought is me (Jean Paul Satre)
  • I think therefore I am (Rene Descartes)
  • I exist as I am (Walt Whitman)

Well, guess what: It doesn’t matter. What matters is what we believe reality is. Because what we believe is what shapes our lives…

...everything thought, every feeling, every action.

And most people do all of these things on autopilot, without understanding why or without making a choice about it.

So, not only is reality what you believe it is (for example):

  • Money is scarce
  • People are mean
  • Life is short
  • Love is elusive…

Your beliefs are so powerful that they actually create your present situation – and your future – in four very specific ways:

  1. How you feel
  2. How you behave
  3. Which people and situations you attract or become attracted to
  4. What meanings you assign to what happens

In summary, reality is what you make it.

You create your reality – past, present and future – based upon how you filter information about the world...based upon your beliefs.

So let's take a closer look at how you are creating your own reality through your beliefs. Once you understand this, you can proactively shift your beliefs to positive, resourceful attitudes and…

...start creating the life of your dreams.

To begin, let’s look at the three filters through which your brain processes “reality”:

  1. Deletion
  2. Distortion
  3. Generalization

These processes can change the reality of incoming information. Filter mechanisms are not necessarily a bad thing…

...as long as you use them consciously to reach a particular result you want.

Deletion

Moment by moment, when there’s too much information coming at you for you to notice all of it, you simply delete some of it. As you walk through a room, there are an infinite number of details that hit your eye…

...but you can’t notice them all.

You don’t notice every spot on the carpet, every scratch on the furniture, every whorl in the wallpaper, every item in the room, and so on. The same thing is true for smells, tastes, sounds, and physical sensations.

Your filters determine which stuff you keep and which stuff you disregard, and this deletion process happens so automatically that you don’t even notice it. It’s not like you say, “Okay, let’s delete this, and keep this, and delete this...”

Your beliefs, values, decisions, memories, and strategies set up your personal deletion system, and it operates quickly and unconsciously.

In addition to sensual material, you have data and ideas coming at you. You use this information to decide what to believe, what to do, who to be attracted to, and how to make a decision.

The interesting aspect of this is that we tend to delete whatever does not agree with our current beliefs or values. When something is contrary to what you believe, you disregard it.

You delete it without even noticing it.

In order to override your tendency to automatically delete what doesn’t agree with your beliefs, there must be something huge and right in your face.

For example, if you’re a nerdy guy, you’ve probably felt invisible to women. Gorgeous women don’t pay any attention to you. If suddenly supermodel types start flirting with you…

...that would be such a unique experience that it might make you take notice of your beliefs and perhaps reevaluated them.

Distortion

Also, the filters in our minds distort incoming information in order to verify what we already believe and value, what we’ve already decided. This distortion might be…

...adding something that isn’t actually there or changing it to look like something we recognize or agree with.

A simple example is how everything reminds you of food when you are hungry.

Here’s another example. If you believe that no one will ever love you, and someone turns you down when you ask them for a date…

...you might see that as evidence that you are, indeed, unlovable.

The real reason may have been that the person was already in a committed relationship or had another commitment that night. It could be that you just weren’t their type and it had nothing to do with your being unlovable.

You’ll either leave out some of the evidence or add something to it so that what’s happening agrees with your belief.

Generalization

The third filter is generalization. Some generalizing is good. For example, if we didn’t make generalizations, we would have to re-learn what a door is and how to open it every time we came to one.

Generalizations can be bad when they stop us from seeing the differences that make something unique and…

...assume that it’s exactly the same as something else.

Let’s say you were cheated by your business partner who stole money from you, you could generalize that to mean “all men will steal from me” or “all business partners will take advantage of me.”

This assumes that just because other people share the same gender with the jerk who stole from you, they’re the same in other respects, including being dishonest and unreliable. From this perspective you don’t see things clearly…

...and your actions might create an outcome you don’t want.

Here’s a hint: When you hear words like all, never, always, no one, everyone, you might start looking for generalizations.

When your filters delete, distort, and generalize the input, what you perceive is not what initially came through your senses. The filtered version may or may not serve you.

Beliefs

Beliefs are those things we hold to be true and that determine our actions and our experience of life.

  1. We develop beliefs about who we are and what our relationship is to the rest of the world based on early life interactions and experiences, especially with our primary caregivers.

  2. Your beliefs, in combination with other aspects of your internal map of reality, create the results, circumstances, and experiences of your life.

Regardless of what you believe, you will find a way to create consistency between your life and your beliefs. Every deeply held belief is true to the person who believes it.

We do whatever it takes to make our beliefs be true.

  3. Significant negative emotional experiences create beliefs that are not resourceful and cause us to focus on what we do not want. The mind takes whatever you focus on as an instruction to create something.

To get what you want, you have to focus on what you want and have beliefs that help the mind to create that result.

  4. Since everything is true to the person who believes it, evaluating beliefs based on whether they are true or false is not helpful. Doing so is indulging in circular, fallacious logic. Conscious, happy people evaluate beliefs based on whether or not they are resourceful…

...do they create the desired results and experience of life?

  5. The most effective way to replace beliefs that do not serve you with those that do is to observe how beliefs creates results in your life. This watching process causes whatever is not resourceful for you to fall away and…

    ...whatever is resourceful to remain.

Once you have watched the creative process with awareness and have seen an unresourceful belief fall away, you are more likely to consciously choose a more resourceful belief that creates the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical results and outcomes you want.

  6. The first step in the process of replacing automatic, unconscious, unresourceful beliefs with conscious, resourceful beliefs is to discover what your core beliefs are.

The most effective way to determine your core beliefs is to examine the results you are getting. For example, if you believe at your core that money is the root of evil…

...you are likely to be poor—or evil.

  7. As long as you continue to hold the same beliefs, you’ll continue to get the same results because there’s no way to…

...continue to hold the same beliefs and get different results.

  8. To install a new belief, focus on it as often as possible and in every way you can think of.

Changing core beliefs can happen in the blink of an eye, but it usually takes most people a bit of time to complete the process.

Take it one step and one day at a time, and let the pace of your progress be okay, whatever it is.

Meditation, especially with Holosync® technology, greatly speeds up this process, because it helps you become more conscious and aware of what you’re creating because…

...it takes the emotional charge off things in your life and allows you to look at them from a more dispassionate perspective.

However long this process takes, it’s worth undertaking. There is a big difference between being an unconscious automatic response mechanism…

...and being a conscious creator of what you want.

Mind Power Issue #73

Wake up to your own power with this remarkable “map”...

Issue #73 – Monday, August 4th, 2017

Last week we got knee-deep into suffering.

Yes, Issue #72 of Mind Power was all about the nature of suffering, from the Buddhist perspective, and how all our suffering is caused…

...by our attachment (clinging) to people, places and things.

Buddhists explain the circumstances of suffering through the Four Noble Truths:

  1. All Life is Suffering

  2. Suffering is Caused by Clinging or Attachment

  3. Suffering Can be Ended by Giving Up Attachment

  4. There is a Path to End Suffering

Last week, I also introduced a solution to end that suffering, through an ancient path that helps relieve the pain, anxiety and stress:

Decoding what I call your “Internal Map of Reality.”

The internal map you created for yourself when you were young and learning to cope with the world, is still very active in your life today. Understanding this map will help you understand your attachments…

...and why they cause you suffering.

So, this issue of Mind Power is dedicated to ending the emotional suffering that comes from the choices you make in your life.

Yes, you read that right: Your suffering comes from the CHOICES YOU MAKE in your life.

Now, there are certainly things you have no choice about, such as, the weather, death, traffic and other people’s actions. But you DO have choice over four other, vital things in your life (which I reveal below).

Before you delete this email as hogwash, let me make you a promise:

After you read the feature article below, you’ll have a better understanding – and a foolproof map – to make conscious choices in your life that serve you instead of sabotage you…

...and bring more of what you want into your life and less of what you don’t.

And who doesn’t want that?

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

Wake Up to Your Own Power:
Decoding Your Internal Map of Reality

by Bill Harris

We all create an Internal Map when we’re young that helps us understand the world and our place in it. This blueprint of “reality,” as we see it, anyway…

...also helps us cope with things that are unpleasant or that we don’t understand.

Decoding this map, observing how it drives us, is THE KEY to giving you CHOICE in your life, and…

...with choice comes freedom.

But, before I get too far into this, I promised to tell you the four vital things about which you DO HAVE CHOICE in your life. And here they are:

  1. How you feel
  2. How you behave
  3. Which people and situations you attract or become attracted to
  4. What meanings you assign to what happens

Right now, you might be saying , “But Bill, I don’t have choice over how I feel. When someone hurts my feelings (insults me, forgets my birthday, cuts me off in traffic) I can’t control that. I don’t have a choice over how they make me feel.”

Aaah...I have to disagree.

While you don’t have a choice over other people’s behavior, you DO have a choice over your own.

And your behavior is often triggered by your emotions, so let’s start there.

How the Brain Filters Information

Like physical pain, emotions are really nothing more than sensations in your body, accompanied by certain thoughts.

When I was younger, I had a big fight with my girlfriend over something inconsequential. I stewed and fumed for a long time. Eventually, I allowed a part of me to sit back and notice all of this from an outside perspective. I noticed how…

... the thoughts happened, how they changed, and how the feelings in my body happened, where they were in my body, how they changed and moved.

I have to admit, I became fascinated by the observations and was letting what happened be okay. The next thing I knew…

...the whole thing was gone.

My resistance, my clinging, to wanting my girlfriend to be a certain way, caused the suffering I was experiencing. I discovered that I couldn’t resist and watch at the same time, and when I shifted to the perspective of the witness

...the resistance and the suffering fell away.

You can’t watch and resist at the same time. You can either watch or be attached, but not both. Resistance doesn’t serve you. You can only do something that doesn’t serve you if you do it unconsciously.

Watching is being conscious.

So when you watch yourself and you are conscious of doing something that doesn’t serve you, you find you can’t keep doing it. It may not be easy to do. However, in any situation…

...the degree to which you accept what is, is the degree to which you avoid suffering.

Consequences

No matter what happens, it is possible to let it be okay. All you need is intention, conscious awareness, and practice. When you resist a situation…

...you compound the consequences…

...because now you are adding suffering—the consequence of resistance—to the consequences already built into the situation. Even in a good situation, if you cling to it lasting forever…

...the clinging will cause suffering.

I remember my first ice cream cone at the age of three. I was in heaven until I got about halfway through. Then I realized that soon the ice cream would be gone. I resisted because I didn’t want the ice cream to be gone; I wanted ice cream forever.

As described in the First Noble Truth, all things pass away and at three, I suffered from my resistance to the end of the ice cream.

Another way to look at this is that the more you don’t let whatever happens be okay, the more you suffer. You are the only one in charge of what you focus on, so you can decide to take conscious control and focus on what you want.

When you learn to do this…

...you wake up to your own power. The whole world created by your mind can be transcended.

Don’t be fooled here. This is not about being detached or numbing out. You feel fear in certain situations, or anger, anxiety, happiness, and so on. This is what it means to be human. Emotions happen; however…

...when you resist emotions or the events that triggered them, you suffer.

An aware person is more alive, not less. The kind of detachment that happens in psychosis, schizophrenia, multiple personality disorders, and even with simple dissociation, are ways of being less aware, less conscious.

The person who is letting whatever happens be okay is very aware of what is happening, is very conscious, and is feeling everything, and experiencing everything.

They’re just not attached to certain outcomes; they are not buying into the idea that to be happy and peaceful things have to happen a certain way.

Be Proactive

Don’t give up! You can have an outcome in mind, take action to do whatever you can to make it happen…

...and still be unattached to the outcome.

You can prefer the outcome without being attached to it. Your happiness and inner peace can come from within, rather than being triggered by whatever does or doesn’t happen outside of you.

You can be motivated without being attached to an outcome. In fact, being attached to an outcome often generates fear…

...because you are thinking you won’t get it.

People often procrastinate or lose their motivation when they picture a negative outcome or the negative part of getting the outcome. You can increase motivation by picturing the task…

...picturing having fun while doing the task and enjoying whatever happens.

In terms of your happiness and inner peace, you know right at the outset that it doesn’t matter what happens.

Ironically, when you let whatever happens be okay, it’s much more likely that you’ll get what you want. This is one of the real ironies of personal and spiritual growth:

The less attached you are, the more likely you are to get what you want.

The more you let what happens be okay, the more the universe lines up behind you to help you…

...create whatever it is you’re focused on creating.

The more attached you are, the more likely you are to find a way to screw things up. Letting whatever happens be okay complements drive or motivation. As you move toward your goal…

...you prefer the outcome you want, but you don’t suffer if it doesn’t happen.

Changing Your Internal Map

Once you decode your Internal Map of Reality, and understand how it drives your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, you can begin to change it for the better, so that you attract what you DO want in life…

...instead of what you don’t want.

(Have you ever noticed that you attract EXACTLY want you DON’T want into your life...over and over? This is your Internal Map at work).

Everyone’s Internal Map is created from their beliefs––about the world, about how life works, about other people, about themselves. Beliefs are those things we hold to be true and that determine our actions and our experience of life.

The brain is a goal seeking mechanism, and a very powerful one. Your brain will either make whatever you believe to be true actually come true in your life or…

...will at least make it seem to be true, which amounts to the same thing.

Many of these heat-seeking beliefs limit your potential and your happiness. The good news is: You can change your beliefs (and your internal map)...

...and as you do, your life changes.

With practice, observation, and ever-increasing awareness, (meditation helps tremendously, by the way) you can override the unresourceful (negative) aspects of your map of reality and create…

...a life that is real and whole—the life that you want.

...to attract the things you most desire in life and eliminate those that sabotage your dreams.

“Holosync has changed my life. I started using it many years ago and went through the entire program. At first, it was a bit of a challenge because it seemed to "bring up" emotional issues that had been hidden from me.

“However, my consistent daily use following all the directions for each level quickly brought me the peace I was seeking.

“After I finished the levels, I put the program away--not such a hot idea. Recently, because of the email newsletters Bill Harris was regularly sending, I got out my Holosync and started using it again on a daily basis.

“WOW! It's now taking me to a whole new experience of peace, balance and harmony. I'm noticing a huge difference in my ability to just observe and not react, not try to fix other people's behavior--a measurable difference in my acceptance of their choices, while at the same time taking responsibility for my own choices.

“Definitely Holosync has changed my life. I wouldn't have been able to process and release and heal so many emotional issues without it.

Thank you for Holosync.”

An end to suffering? A “Noble Truth” explains how…

Issue #72 – Monday, July 31, 2017

The Buddhists say that all life is suffering. We want things we don’t have. We don’t want things we do have. And everything – good, bad and indifferent – eventually passes away.

The Four Noble truths of Buddhism suggest that suffering does not come from your circumstances; it comes from clinging to circumstances being a certain way.

Then there is the notion of “ending suffering” through the rigorous meditation, deprivation and self-restraint that will lead you…

...to the sort of detachment that ends suffering.

But who wants to suffer in order to end their suffering? It seems like a cruel trick.

Fortunately, Buddha found a softer, easier way, which came to be known as the Eightfold Path. I explain this ancient path in the feature story, below, and I also give you…

...a foolproof “Map” that will greatly assist you on this profound and powerful journey.

Because no one should have to suffer, even when outside circumstances seem to ”go badly.” You always, always have a choice.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

P.S. Over 40 million American adults suffer from a sleep disorder–and many more in the rest of the world. Those with a sleep disorder are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases and problems such as…

...depression, anxiety, diabetes, cancer, reduced quality of life, reduced energy and productivity, emotional and relationship problems, difficulty concentrating, reduced mental clarity, poor memory…

...and the list goes on and on.

If you’re one of these people, or know someone who is, please take a look at our Sleep Suite in the Check It Out section below.

Brainwave technology can help you get the full, healthy, rejuvenating rest you need to thrive in your life.

The Four Noble Truths
End Suffering with Your Internal Map of Reality

by Bill Harris

It’s said that Buddha sat under the Bodhi tree and became enlightened, then he went to the Deer Park near Benares and began to teach what he learned to the other ascetics he’d previously been hanging out with.

These ascetics were serious meditators who were part of a tradition of detaching from the world of the mind through a rigorous process of…

...depriving the body of food, shelter, sleep, or much of anything else, and also of depriving the mind of stimulation.

Buddha thought there was an easier way, and began to teach them what came to be known as The Four Noble Truths.

The First Noble Truth: All Life is Suffering

People suffer because they resist what is. The Buddha’s insight is that our lives are a struggle, and we do not find ultimate happiness or satisfaction…

...in anything we experience. In this "mundane” world we cling to and crave things that are impermanent, or that we can’t or don’t have. We expect happiness from outside circumstances...

...and, therefore, we cannot attain real happiness.

Life contains inevitable, unavoidable suffering. Some forms of suffering are obvious: A broken leg, the loss of a loved one, illness and trauma.

Other forms of suffering are more subtle, such as frustration, disappointment and rejection. Others are even more subtle: Longing, anxiety, restlessness and boredom.

In the end, all suffering comes from three rules that govern the world created by the mind:

  1. Everything changes and eventually passes away

  2. Sometimes you don’t get what you want

  3. Sometimes you get what you don’t want

You can approach the First Noble Truth, and these three rules, in one of two ways. The first way is to resist them, to fight against them. Which leads me to the Second Noble Truth.

The Second Noble Truth:

Suffering is Caused by Clinging or Attachment

Wanting something you can’t have or not wanting something you do have produce the same result—both lead to suffering. You can take action…

...without clinging to the outcome or resisting how it ultimately turns out.

When you resist change, you can experience unpleasant emotions and physical symptoms. You get angry, become stressed, anxious and fearful. You might even behave in ways that have unpleasant consequences. Wanting things to be different from what they really are…

...is like beating your head against a wall.

For example, if you don’t get selected as the Employee of the Month and you resist that fact, you suffer. If you are fired and you resist, you suffer. And even if you do get Employee of the Month, if the next month someone else gets the title and you resist that, you’ll suffer.

Another more resourceful, approach is to find a way to stop fuming, fussing and suffering and accept that…

...“it is what it is” and you cannot change the past that created “what is”.

The Third Noble Truth, however, offers hope. It implies that suffering does not come from circumstances…

...it comes from your clinging to circumstances being a certain way.

The Third Noble Truth:
Suffering Can be Ended by Giving Up Attachment

The Third Noble Truth equates to this: Let Whatever Happens Be Okay. If you let whatever happens be okay, if you are not attached to the outcome…

...you will not suffer.

You can accept what is. You may prefer that things not change and pass away, you may wish that you would get what you want or not get what you don’t want.

You might take action to change things or to keep them the same, but if you don’t succeed…

...you can accept what is.

When you are “attached” to outcomes, your disposition, happiness and inner peace are dependent on the outcome being a certain way. When you let whatever happens be okay…

...you are independent of the outcome and can experience happiness and inner peace, regardless.

You remain solidly peaceful and happy whether you try to change things or not, allow yourself to accept, "Whatever happens, it’s okay, I will remain happy and peaceful."

The Fourth Noble Truth:

There is a Path to End Suffering

Buddhists call the path to end suffering the “Eightfold Path.” Although referred to as steps on an ancient road, the Eightfold Path is actually eight aspects of living that, when integrated into everyday life…

...ends the craving and clinging that leads to suffering.

The eightfold path is also referred to as the middle way, which leads us away from extremes and…

...encourages us to seek a simpler approach to life. Here are the elements of the Eightfold Path:

  • Right Understanding

  • Right Intent

  • Right Speech

  • Right Action

  • Right Livelihood

  • Right Effort

  • Right Mindfulness and

  • Right Concentration

Many years ago, I discovered what I call the Internal Map of Reality. This “map” offers a powerful and practical starting point to the Eightfold Path. It explains how your brain filters information…

...and how you can learn to observe your thoughts, feelings and actions in a way that allows you to have choice over them.

Your Internal Map of Reality

The Internal Map of Reality reveals how external information enters the brain and passes through various unconscious filters you’ve created. You interpret this filtered information and behave as you choose…

...which leads to your results in life.

Most people are aware of the outside event and their behavior, but are unaware of everything in between. Since it’s invisible…

...it looks like the outside event causes the inner state and the behavior.

In reality, it’s how the brain processes the outside event that creates your inner state and the behavior you express. If you process it in a way that involves clinging or resistance, you suffer.

If, as a child, you were bitten by a dog, you could spend your whole life feeling fear when you see a dog. A different person, with different experiences might feel happy when they see a dog.

Suffering happens when you resist changing your belief.

Do dogs cause fear? Do dogs cause joy? Dogs are dogs. You choose the happiness or fear. The way you process circumstances creates the results. If you process them by clinging or resistance…

...you create suffering.

Here is the key point: No matter what the situation is, you can process things in a way that avoids suffering. People sometimes assume that certain situations induce suffering inherently and that there’s nothing you can do about it.

There is another way to look at this. If you have physical pain, for example, you can let it be okay. The sensation of pain will be there either way, but you suffer only if you resist it.

Let’s look at the three kinds of physical intensity:

  • Positive intensity, such as an orgasm

  • Negative intensity, as with physical pain

  • Neutral intensity, watching openly with curiosity

We tend to cling to things that have positive intensity—to cling to pleasure. We tend to resist negative intensity—to resist displeasure. Even with positive intensity, we might mourn that the pleasure is over...

...and suffer because we no longer have it.

Strive for neutral intensity. It may not be easy to do. However, in any situation, the degree to which you accept what is…

...is the degree to which you avoid suffering.

Can it be this easy? Hacking the dark side

Issue #71 – Monday, July 24th, 2017

What’s eating at you these days? Are you finding “obnoxious” people everywhere? Angry people, slow people, shallow people, selfish people, or just plain weird people? They’re everywhere!

Here’s the bad news – and the good news – about that.

You’re looking in a mirror all the time. That which ruffles you about others, is also in you. British novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray, put it this way:

“The world is a looking-glass, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face.”

This “truth” about the human condition may want you to pull out all your hair, one follicle at a time. Or you may think it’s just flat-out not true at all.

But wait. There’s good news: By owning these “reflections,” what I call your shadow parts, you liberate yourself from them. You become conscious of how they drive you – how they “cast shadows” on your life. Knowing this, you can learn to…

...make better choices in your thoughts, feelings and actions.

And more good news: That which you admire in others, is also in you.

Even more good news: Bringing your shadows into the light, owning them, understanding them and becoming aware of their influence on you, will help you…

...live a happier, emotionally peaceful, and successful life.

If this sounds good to you, keep reading! I explain how this works and how to turn your shadows into light, in the feature story below.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

P.S. And please don’t miss your special invitation to the party in the “Check it Out” section below. I want you to come to one of the biggest, most mind-blowing online events in the history of self-mastery.

Shadows & Light:
How to Own Your Dark Side...and Be Free of it

by Bill Harris

In working with hundreds of thousands of people over several decades, I’ve found that nearly all human unhappiness is connected to one thing:

Shadows.

Shadows, in this context, are disowned or repressed human qualities. If a certain area of your life isn’t working…

…you can be sure that there is a shadow part involved.

Becoming aware of your particular “shadows” – how and why they cause you to think, feel and act……

…is a major key to living a happier, emotionally peaceful, and successful life.

We all repress or disown normal human qualities that we think are wrong or inappropriate. Many of the difficulties we have in life are the result of these disowned parts…

...which many psychologists refer to as shadows.

When repressed, these shadow parts come out in immature and dysfunctional ways. By repressing them, we actually end up creating, attracting, or expressing more of them.

In every society, there is social agreement about which aspects of us are “wrong” or “bad”. There is, of course, variation from family to family. What one family sees as “wrong” might be okay in another family.

Excellence might be a positive quality in one family, while in another the child who excels might be told, “Who do you think you are? Do you think you’re better than other people?”

Whatever our family’s values, we received negative reinforcement when we exhibited certain qualities and positive reinforcement when we exhibited others.

We learn that it isn’t safe to express what our family or our culture consider to be negative qualities. To keep ourselves from expressing them, we disowned them, which means that we pushed them…

...into the basement of our consciousness, out of our awareness.

We don’t ever really get rid of these repressed shadow parts. They leak out anyway, appearing in our life in covert and dysfunctional ways.

Let’s say, that for you, anger is a bad thing. Because it’s bad, you resist it in others, and you resist it in yourself. However, like a balloon, which when squeezed in one place pops out in another…

...the anger expresses itself, in one way or another.

Perhaps you’ve made anger wrong or bad because your father’s anger was painful for you when you were small. It also wasn’t safe to show your own anger toward him. He was bigger and stronger and he didn’t like it when you disagreed with him. So…

...you repressed your anger.

You also decided to avoid angry people. After all, you don’t like them. And they scare you.

Ironically, when you disown anger in this way it becomes a central feature of your life. You see angry people everywhere. And, when you encounter an angry person…

...you’re strongly (and negatively) affected by him or her.

Angry people really bother you, even if you aren’t the one they’re angry with. You’re afraid of them and you’re angry about them.

A person with no anger-related trauma, however, and who therefore has not disowned his or her anger, sees the same angry people—after all, they aren’t invisible…

...but isn’t triggered by them in the same way you are.

For you, though, life seems to be a constant stream of angry people. How do all these angry people find you? By disowning your own anger, your attention is drawn to the angry people…

...and you’re less likely to notice or be attracted to people who aren’t angry. Because your father’s anger traumatized you, you’re on the lookout for it, so you can avoid it.

As I’ve said many times, focusing on what you don’t want actually causes you to create or attract more of it. So, even though it’s the last thing you want, you attract angry people. And, when you encounter them…

…you’re powerfully affected by their anger.

Everyone can plainly see that you have a lot of anger—everyone but you. You, however, don’t acknowledge—or even realize—that you’re angry.

You’ve disowned it. It’s a shadow.

For you, it’s out there, in others. You don’t see it in yourself. You’re against anger, because it’s such a bad thing.

Ironically, even though you’re against anger, you often express your disowned anger to others in covert and dysfunctional ways. See if any of these behavior patterns apply to you:

  • You fail to do what you say you’ll do (because you really didn’t want to do it)

  • You’re late for things you really didn’t want to do

  • You make cutting jokes about others

  • You become sullen or stubborn

  • You’re conveniently forgetful

  • You avoid responsibility

  • You make excuses

  • You complain a lot

  • You blame others

  • You use sarcasm...

...and so on. In one way or another, your disowned anger is expressed.

In other words, you’re passive-aggressive. You express your anger, but not directly. You can’t express it directly because you’ve disowned it. It’s still there, though. And, in addition to being unpleasant for others, you suffer, too.

Your own disowned anger eats at you.

Of course, anger isn’t the only thing you could disown and repress. I’ve just been using anger as a common example.

You could also disown fear, or selfishness, or thousands of other qualities. You’ll likely disown anything your parents or other authority figures didn’t want you to express:

Wanting, happiness, sexuality, joy, sadness, aggression, pride, intelligence, the urge to be noticed, neediness, being good at things, feeling like a victim…

...or thousands of other human feelings and urges.

A positive quality can also be a shadow. When you see a negative quality you’ve disowned, it triggers you in a negative way. When you see a positive quality you’ve disowned—for instance, charisma, kindness, leadership, talent, or intelligence…

...you’ll put the person who exhibits it on a pedestal.

You’ll adore or admire that quality in others, but you won’t see it in yourself. You’ve disowned it.

In fact, it’s a general rule that all qualities—disowned or not—exist in all people. And all of them, no matter how positive or negative they seem, are normal human characteristics.

When you’re unaware of a shadow, you don’t have choice about your emotional reaction to it—you just react. And, you have no choice about how you express that reaction. And, you’ll also attract, unconsciously…

...a constant stream of people who exhibit the shadow aspect you’ve disowned.

When you become aware of a shadow and re-own it, you have choice over it. You move from unconsciously being it to consciously having it.

When you re-own a shadow, what seemed to be a negative quality matures into something positive. Immature, reactive anger, for instance, might turn into a mature and reasoned unwillingness to tolerate injustice. Narcissistic selfishness matures into mature self-love.

Every shadow has a mature form, and re-owning a shadow allows you to express that quality in a mature and positive way.

Awareness is the key to this transformation. To become more aware of how you’re creating your experience of life is to…

...watch your mind and observe how it works.

Since the internal representations we make lead directly to our feelings, our behaviors, and which people or situations we attract or become attracted to, becoming aware of how we do that gives us choice.

It allows us to stop creating our experience of life automatically, based on the past and, instead, to…

...create our life by choice, in the moment.

"My first thought was, Thank God, but this is ridiculous! Can it be this easy?

“After that initial explosion of context and awareness, I spent the next nine months plunging into and releasing layer after layer of pain, shadow and trauma.

“And I found that I could stick with the process and the sometimes very scary nature of the encounter with my shadow elements, because of the vast and hugely expanded awareness that had come online for me in that first week of using Holosync.

Curiosity: The most powerful tool you have...

Issue #70 – Monday, July 17th, 2017

Why would you ever do, say or feel something against your own self-interest?

This is a question that has baffled almost everyone I’ve ever met (including myself, many years ago).

We say things we regret, we feel things – anger, resentment, jealousy – that are toxic to ourselves and others, and we act on impulse – cookie anyone? – instead of with forethought.

Well, I’ve discovered a very powerful tool that literally dissolves this phenomenon, and I’ll share it with you in the feature story below.

I’ll also reveal a deceptively simple solution that will give you tremendous power over your choices and actions, and who and what you attract into your life.

And, I’ll explain all this in a way that makes down-to-earth, practical sense. So please keep reading, and [hint]…

...“witness” your life change – for the better – right before your eyes.

Be well.

Bill Harris, Founder/CEO

The Principle of Witnessing

by Bill Harris

Everyday we communicate with dozens of people who are using the Centerpointe program.

Some are having a hard time with the program, and with life in general (usually for the same reason). Some are angry, depressed, fearful, anxious, or confused…

...or are creating any number of other responses. One of the main instructions we give these people is to “watch what is happening—watch with curiosity.”

This is a deceptively simple instruction that nonetheless has tremendous power. What does it mean? And how do you do it?

Being the witness, the watcher, the observer, has been a part of meditative practice for centuries…

...but what this really means is not often explained in a way that makes down-to-earth practical sense.

You may be tired of hearing me harp on the subject of resistance, and how resistance creates any discomfort you may be experiencing in your life. I find myself saying or writing at least fifty times a week…

...that if you are having any discomfort in the Centerpointe program or in life in general, it’s because somewhere, on some level, there is resistance.

To adopt a position of power, one in which you have control over your destiny…

...you must take full responsibility for whatever response you are creating to whatever is happening. If you cannot acknowledge that you are creating your response to everything that happens, you are helpless, a victim of your environment.

Only when you take responsibility is there a possibility of doing something about your situation or creating something different. The main source, then…

...of both personal power and peace of mind is taking all responsibility for what happens.

So, first, you must acknowledge that, whatever your experience with Holosync or with life in general, it is your response. It comes from you, from some aspect of who you are.

As I’ve said so many times, “Life may provide the stimulus, but you provide the response.” Sometimes this response comes from an unconscious part of you…

...one you have little or no control over (or so it seems), but, nonetheless, it comes from you (rather from some force outside of you, regardless of the appearance).

Why would you create a negative response? Because a part of you is in resistance to whatever is happening. Why, then, would someone resist it?

Because some part of you is trying to reorganize, to change, whether as a result of the Holosync® stimulus or something else that pushes you to grow…

...but you associate the old way with your safety and, at least unconsciously, don’t feel safe letting the change happen.

Whatever the discomfort, whatever the upheaval, whatever the issue, some part of you—some inner strategy that you associate with safety is trying to grow and evolve, and another part of you is not willing to let go.

Here is where the concept of watching, witnessing, of being the observer, comes to play. If resistance is the poison, witnessing is the antidote.

Some very wise people, over many centuries of experience with the process of personal mental, emotional, and spiritual change…

...have discovered that if you can just step back and watch whatever is happening, with no agenda for what does or does not happen, the resistance disappears.

And, any changes that are trying to take place can happen without suffering.

All personal change approaches that work involve the creation of a greater awareness of what is happening, based on the fundamental principle that you can only continue behaviors and feelings that are self-destructive…

...if you do them unconsciously—without awareness. Most of us have very elaborate strategies designed to keep us unaware, but there is a very simple way to defeat them.

If you step back the next time you are feeling any kind of discomfort, and say to yourself, “There I am, feeling angry” (or whatever it is you are feeling)...

...and then just notice yourself being angry, without trying to stop it or change it, without any agenda for what should happen.

Any feeling you have will be a sensation in your body, so just notice where in your body you feel it. Notice if it stays the same or changes, if it stays in one place or moves around.

Become genuinely curious about it. Pretend you are a scientist who has been searching the Amazon jungle for 20 years for a certain butterfly, and finally...here it is!

How carefully and curiously would you watch? Bring that amount of curiosity to bear on whatever is happening for you in that moment.

Whatever uncomfortable feelings you are having, you’ve probably been having them off and on for a long time. But I would be willing to bet that you have never really watched them with curiosity…

...to find out what is really happening and how you create them. You’re so busy trying to make them stop, or blaming them on someone else, or analyzing them, or in some other way becoming unconscious about them.

Notice that you cannot be a stuck in your suffering very effectively if a part of you is watching. If you are curious and watching, it becomes harder and harder to resist. Curiosity is on the opposite side of the fence from resistance…

...and without resistance you cannot create suffering. Once you are successfully watching, it becomes very obvious that you could make another choice of how to respond to whatever is happening.

On the other hand, if you are watching with an agenda—to stop the feeling—you’re not really watching. To be the witness, you must have no agenda other than to watch and be curious.

Some personal growth teachers will tell you to “love the feeling,” or “embrace the feeling,” or “surrender to the feeling.” What they really mean is to stop resisting it. And the way to do that is to become genuinely curious about it and watch.

Stop fighting with yourself and just notice what is happening. Distress and discomfort fall away when you do this, almost as if by magic.

So, if resistance is your middle name, as it was mine before I went through the Centerpointe program, please take very seriously the simple instruction to “watch with curiosity.”

It takes some practice and some willpower because the habit of resisting is deeply ingrained and very much an automatic response. But after some practice…

...it will become effortless.

In any situation where you are uncomfortable, no matter what it is, you are resisting people, things, or situations being the way they are. To the degree you do that…

...you suffer.

If you can step aside and watch yourself have whatever reaction you are having, you will find that there are other choices of how to respond….

..at which point you can pick the one you would like to have, rather than just being an automatic response mechanism who suffers every time you are stimulated in a certain way.

People with “higher consciousness” or “expanded awareness” are those who have mastered this principle of witnessing.

You can do it, too.

Start practicing, and keep meditating.

Wise Words

This Really Happened

"I find I am able now to detach and observe myself doing and be the witness. I am also able to remain peaceful and centred long after I would have crumbled. I can be objective about my suffering and consciously choose not to continue but to choose joy and peace instead. This is a real change for me.

“I especially value the regular notes you send and knowing the Hotline is there. Sort of like a crash helmet. I hope I never need it, but knowing I have it gives me a sense of security in this anything-but-secure world.

“I have found I am more philosophical about recent world events knowing there are no victims and there is much I can do, just by becoming the Peace I want to see the world enjoy.”
