The biggest fear of all: Money

Issue #66 – Monday, June 19, 2017

Do you know what you’re afraid of? This may seem obvious – as in, heights, corruption, terrorists, etc…

...but you might be very surprised at the fears lurking in the subconscious mind, that are actually sabotaging your success.

I came across a survey a long time ago that sticks in my mind to this day. The survey revealed that people’s greatest fear was public speaking.

Fear #2: Death by fire.

Yes, it seems people would rather experience a fiery ball of death that stand up in front of a crowd and start talking.

My good friend, John Assaraf, however, who is one of the world’s leading behavioral experts...

...has a new twist on people’s greatest fear. According to John – and I totally believe thispeople fear what they also covet most:

How to Overcome Your Fear of Money

by John Assaraf

If you were to stop random people on the street and ask them what their biggest fears were, I’m sure you’d get a number of different answers. But there are a few common responses you’d hear over and over again.

Most people would probably fess up to being afraid of things like public speaking, heights, spiders, and maybe even clowns.

But very few people, if any at all, would ever fess up to their biggest fear of all.

I’m talking about the fear of money.

A lot of people don’t even realize they have this fear. But if you look at their behaviors and the decisions most people make, it becomes obvious that most people suffer from this.

Where Your Fear of Money Comes From

Money is nothing more than a tool we humans use to exchange for goods and services. It’s a tool just like a hammer or a screwdriver. It’s nothing more than pieces of paper that helps solve our problems.

But why then, do we have such a strong emotional attachment to it?

A big part of the reason is because most people are taught how to think about money from their parents.

And as we grow up and watch our parents and their relationship with money, we start to develop our own money story.

You have your own, hidden money story that dictates the way you think and feel about money.

A child with rich parents might grow up thinking that they should focus on buying assets, live below their means, and invest in themselves to improve their money-making abilities.

A child with poor parents might grow up thinking that money is the root of all evil. Or that the only way to get rich is to screw people over. Or that they don’t deserve money because they’re from a “working class” family.

Everyone has a different money story.

And your own personal money story will dictate how you think about money and how you behave with it.

How Your Fear of Money Is Holding You Back

The fear of money itself manifest in many different forms.

Some people might have difficulty accepting more money into their lives. If you’ve ever felt unworthy of a large gift… or have been afraid to ask for a sale…

...or have felt like you could never earn a certain amount of income… then your hidden money story is causing this fear.

Some people might have difficulty holding onto money. Ever wonder why some people earn a high income, but never seem to have money for the things that they need?

Some people are great at earning money, but they can’t hang onto it for an extended period of time. Sometimes, this just comes down to spending habits - but that’s rare. Oftentimes, this is a direct result of your money story causing you to make certain decisions.

Some people might try desperately to return back to their financial set point. Why is it that so many lottery winners blow through all of their money and end up right back where they started within a few years?

It’s because in their minds, they have a certain financial set point, of income level they feel comfortable at. And their subconscious mind will do everything in it’s power to return them back to their comfort zone - even if it means engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors.

This doesn’t just happen to lottery winners. It happens to everyone. If you’ve ever had a record breaking month in your business, but have quickly returned back to you baseline, then you’ve experienced this effect.

If you ever want to achieve your personal and financial goals, the first thing you need to focus on is rewriting your hidden money story… so you can overcome your fear of money and start experiencing success.

How to Rewrite Your Money Story and Achieve Your Financial Goals

There are a number of different techniques and strategies you can use to rewrite your money story and overcome your fear of money.

Here are three of my favorites that can produce some immediate changes in your mindset:

1) Write down your financial goals in a visible place every single day. The more you see your income goals, the more comfortable your brain will become with them.

I know one writer who made a picture of his income goals as the background of his phone so he would see it multiple times a day.

I instruct many of my coaching students to take a sticky note or index card and write their goal down every morning.

This consistent repetition will help you become comfortable seeing your goal number and will reduce that “sticker shock” fear reaction you might feel when you see this number.

2) Use positive self-talk. The next time you find yourself in a situation involving a monetary transaction, stop for a moment and listen to your inner monologue. Are you talking to yourself in a kind way? Or are you being harsh? Is that voice inside a friend or a foe?

If you want to feel completely comfortable accepting more and more money in your life, you need to speak to yourself in a positive and supporting tone. Tell yourself that you are deserving of wealth and abundance.

Explain to your brain WHY you are. Think of as many reasons as you can. The more you convince yourself that you’re worthy, the more you’ll start to believe in yourself.

3) Speak large sums of money into existence. Can you remember a time when you had to ask someone for an incredibly large amount of money? How did those words feel as they passed your lips?

...Were you standing there with your chin held high, full of confidence? Or did your palms start to sweat… as you squeaked out the amount you were asking for?

If you ever want to earn and keep large sums of money, you need to be cool, calm and collected when discussing money.

If you need to, spend five minutes in front of the mirror and practice how you would confidently ask for a sale.

Say out loud, “That’ll be $25,000 dollars” (or use whatever amount is hard for you to say) with confidence.

A Life Without Fear

You couldn’t control much about your childhood. You couldn’t control the advice you received from your parents, teachers and friends about money as you were growing up.

That’s OK.

You now have the knowledge you need to rewrite your money story… overcome your fear of money… and achieve your personal and financial goals.

If you make the decision to change your brain, anything is possible. No goal will ever be out of reach.

Now’s the time to get over your fears and turn your dreams into a reality.

Good luck.
