A VERY intriguing question about your life…

Someone recently asked me what it means to be spiritual. I thought I knew, but this turned out to be a difficult question to answer.

Here’s what I finally came up with:

“Being spiritual” means being comfortable in your own skin, and not fighting…

…against the general flow of how things are.

How, though, do you do that?

If you stop to think about it, human beings are caught in a rather strange situation.

First, we’re quite fragile. We need things to be “just right” or we can’t survive. We need certain gases to breathe, an uninterrupted flow of food and water, a certain narrow temperature range…

…that’s only found on a certain kind of planet, a certain distance from a certain kind of star.

Take any of this away and…

…we can’t survive.

Then, there are all these other people who get in the way of what we want or need. We do our best to influence them, but there are so many of them, all with their own agenda, which is often at odds with ours.

And finally, everything keeps changing–and eventually ends or falls apart. And, unlike other animals, we KNOW this is going to happen (which gives us a very weird feeling).

Let’s face it. Suffering – losses, disappointments, and physical suffering – are built into being a human being.

How, then, do we navigate our way through this incredibly worrisome and difficult situation?

  • Do we fight? Do we resist?
  • Do we help others? Do we try to be good?
  • Do we just tend to our own needs?
  • Do we just party and try have a good time?
  • Do we try to escape? (Not possible!)

Many people believe that certain “spiritual practices” are helpful (I’m one of those people). Today we even have what some call “spiritual technologies”.

In fact, there’s a whole subculture interested in creating effective “spiritual technologies”…

…which are just easier and faster ways to help us navigate through the weird situation we’re in.

What’s really wild is that these “spiritual technologies” turn out to be ways to change key parts of the brain…

…which perhaps isn’t as “romantic” as the old spiritual explanations, though much more accurate.

And, because scientists know so much now about how to change the brain (including the same changes created by “old-school” spiritual methods)…

…it’s possible to get remarkable results in a fraction of the time.

So, what are the key parts of the brain that must change to get these remarkable results?

The Limbic System and the Prefrontal Cortex.

If you’ve been reading Mind Power, you know there’s a war going on between these two major parts of your brain. And you probably know that which side wins shapes nearly everything in your life.

When your limbic system is overactive and in control, the problems of life are much more difficult. The limbic system is involved in motivation, emotion, learning, memory, and is strongly activated in life-threatening situations.

There are two main, destructive results of an overactive limbic system:

1) A chronic fight-or-flight stress response, during which…

  • Your brain produces cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress hormones. This creates inflammation that leads to health problems, many of which are life-threatening or accelerate aging…
  • Blood flows away from the brain to your limbs so you can fight or flee. You lose IQ points, experience brain fog, and make bad decisions…
  • The hippocampus (involved in memory) shrinks…
  • You experience unpleasant emotions, including anger, fear, anxiety, depression, etc.

2) You make “I want it now and I don’t care about the consequences” bad decisions, such as…

  • Eating what you resolved not to eat…
  • Eating more than you should…
  • Buying things you don’t need with money you don’t have…
  • Destructive emotional reactions and outbursts you later regret…
  • Forming bad habits and addictions…
  • Blowing off dietary resolutions…
  • Blowing off exercising…
  • Blowing off meditation…
  • Blowing off working on your goals…

These bad decisions are all driven by a powerful neurotransmitter, dopamine.

When you’re under the spell of dopamine you don’t consider future consequences. Your ability to delay gratification decreases significantly. And, you are drawn to and captivated by the latest “bright shiny objects”.

When rats were given a squirt of dopamine for pulling a level, they did so continuously, without stopping to eat, sleep, or have sex.

When researchers required the rats to cross an electrified grid to get to the level they continued to pull it over and over until their little rat feet were literally burned off.

Humans respond to dopamine in the same way, making one bad dopamine-inspired decision after another until they’ve “burned off” their bank accounts, relationships, arteries, lungs, or any other area of life touched by their bad decisions.

Can you see why calming the limbic system is the answer to most self-created human challenges and problems?

But, just calming the limbic system isn’t enough. To really see remarkable changes one must also strengthen the prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex is the source of…

  • Executive function
  • Rational thinking
  • Learning from experience
  • Creativity
  • Concentration, focus
  • Impulse control
  • Forethought, goal setting, persistence
  • Organization
  • Problem solving
  • The ability to feel and express emotions
  • Empathy.

If your prefrontal cortex is strong enough, it’s able to successfully oversee your limbic system (by overriding stupid limbic system decisions).

So here’s the BIG solution:

  • Calm your limbic system
  • Enhance your prefrontal cortex

And, lucky for us, there exist several excellent methods for calming the limbic system and enhancing the prefrontal cortex.

  • Supplements. I give specific recommendations in today’s “Sixty-Second Secret”.
  • Breathing. Slow breathing calms the limbic system.
  • Exercise. Research shows that short 1-4 minute bursts followed by a rest period, repeated several times, are more effective than longer periods of less intense exercise.
  • Avoid stress. Stress causes the limbic system to become overactive. Lifestyle changes that remove stress from your life are highly beneficial.
  • Nutrition. Diets that are high in protein, low in carbs, and high in “good fat” (coconut oil, avocados, butter, omega 3s, extra virgin olive oil) help keep the limbic system calm.
  • Sleep. 7-8 hours of sleep a night helps keep the limbic system calm.
  • Meditation. There is an overwhelming amount of research that shows meditation to be the most powerful method for calming the limbic system AND enhancing the prefrontal cortex.

Unfortunately, there are some big problems with meditation. Few people actually do it, there is a long learning curve, and it takes a long time to see significant results.

This is where the “spiritual technologies” I mentioned earlier come in.
