A Return to Compassion

Over the last couple of decades, the practice of meditation has undergone a rather significant transition. It's gone from being kind of a mystical, magical, "new age" thing you do in order to have some sort of metaphysical experience, to being a legitimate and scientifically-proven method that…

...combats the effects of stress, improves physical and mental health, and heals emotional issues.

I realize I'm dabbling in generalizations a bit here. After all, in many cultures and for thousands of years, meditation was not all that "magical." It was just something you did as a matter of course, like brushing your teeth…

...as a normal  part of your daily routine.

Even so, I've been observing this shift with great interest over the last 30 years or so, as meditation has found solid footing among the decidedly western, or conventional, forms of therapies and medical treatments.

Scientists have proven that meditation calms the limbic system (our fight/flight center) and strengthens the prefrontal cortex (where most of our healthy decisions come from). Doctors routinely recommend that their patients take up a meditation practice to help with everything…

...from hypertension and insomnia to weight management and depression.

The bottom line is that meditation works. It's been proven time and again to have a very real, very significant impact, especially for those who practice it consistently (and even more so, in my experience, for those who use Holosync as a meditation tool).

Meditation is no longer some magical practice done by silent robed monks sitting in a remote Tibetan monastery.

Today you'll find meditators among corporate executives, professional athletes, cooks, grocery store clerks, coffee house baristas, and physicists studying the origins of the universe. Meditation isn't just popular, it's pervasive.

But there’s a gap looming on the horizon.

We’ve lost something important between the profound and ancient principles of meditation, and the modern “science of the mind.”

While meditation clearly serves your physical and mental health in powerful scientific ways...there is a core emotional benefit to meditation, deeply rooted in its earliest traditions and practices:

Compassion.  

Compassion has the power to diminish, even dissolve, the ghosts and rogues lurking in the shadows of your mind. 

With greater compassion, you’ll live a more peaceful life. You’ll experience authentic kindness and understanding toward others––from the slow lady in the fast lane…

...to the person who broke your heart.

With compassion, you can find forgiveness and gratitude. You can open your heart further and further towards love, where you can attract and build profoundly fulfilling relationships.

Bill Harris once said, “The love in your life is a reflection of how much you love and trust.”

This includes love and trust of yourself. I don’t mean in the narcissistic, “I’m all that and a bag of chips” sort of way. Rather, with healthy self-esteem that allows us to recognize–and release–feelings that don’t serve us (or others).

In Buddhism these negative feelings are known as Dvesha, “aversions” or “ill will”.

Most everyone experiences aversions at various times in their lives–– including guilt, shame, fear, worry, hatred and anger. In some cases, these feelings lead to incredibly self-destructive behavior, as well as harmful thoughts, words and actions toward others.

The opposite of Dvesha (aversion), which is considered one of the 3 Poisons (character flaws) of human nature, is Mettā, or loving kindness.

The meditation practice known as metta bhavana, for example, is practiced daily in many traditions. Loosely translated, metta bhavana means…

...loving kindness extended to all beings. 

This state of mind, which can be developed through meditation, has a profound outward affect on your internal mental/emotional states as well as your external behavior.

So, is it really possible to live a life without anger, fear, jealousy or guilt? Without spending the rest of your born days in the lotus position on a remote mountaintop?

Yes. It is possible. 

Even when an external event––person, place or thing–triggers a strong negative emotion in you, you can learn to choose your reaction to it.

Bill Harris said that with enough awareness, “There’s no reason you need to feel bad for more than a few moments.” Awareness–your ability to observe in real time, how your brain creates your reality…

...is the intervening step between what happens and how you respond to what happens.

Meditation, particularly with Holosync, expands your ability to observe these external events with curiosity and awareness. And with awareness, you can choose compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and love––instead of knee-jerk, limbic-based reactions of frustration, anger, resentment and other aversions.

One last thought on compassion:

If all this time we spend looking inward, in meditation, seems self-serving, consider these words from Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist, Thich Nhat Hahn:

“If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.”
