The Power of Dwelling on the Positive

Your brain is a busy and complicated thing. It has 100 billion neurons (give or take) and a quadrillion synapses.

Your brain also generates between 10 and 23 watts of power...enough energy to power a light bulb.

It thinks an average of 60,000 thoughts per day; it can create more than 90 different emotions; and it works around the clock. As in, it never stops.

It can recall the past, visualize the future, and experience the sublime “present” moment. It is the most powerful machine in the universe.

You brain can also sabotage your every effort to make a better life for yourself.

It can confuse and baffle you. It can thwart your fondest hopes and dreams. Or…

...it can attract your desires like a magnet.

Let’s take a deep dive into how all this works, and how to rewire your brain to automatically SERVE you instead of SABOTAGE you.

Dwelling on the Negative

If nine good things happen to you today, and one bad thing also happens…

...guess which one you’re most likely to dwell on?

Right. The bad one.  

In fact, the ONE “bad” thing becomes bigger and BIGGER the more you think about it…

...until you are practically foaming at the mouth, churning it over and over and over.

Does it help to know you’re not alone? Probably not.

But the solution lies in the science of the brain, and not in human error….And THAT is comforting news, indeed.

The truth is that human beings remember negative experiences more than happy ones. And we do it, automatically, for a reason.

Your brain is WIRED to prioritize the negative things over the positive ones...for your own good. 

Your brain also has a “safety first’ mechanism in the hippocampus.

Sort of like your brain saying, “This hurts me more than it hurts you.” (Riiight.)

It sees any kind of change–even what you think as positive change–as a threat to your survival.

Why? Because it takes brain power to survive. It doesn’t just happen all by itself. Who knew?

If you’re wondering why you get stuck in a rut of negative thoughts or self-sabotaging behaviors…

...it’s because your brain is trying to protect you.

It wants to save you from yourself. It’s thinking things like:

  • It’s easier to watch reruns of Gilligan’s Island on Netflix

  • This takes too much brain power

  • You don’t know how to do that

  • Someone might laugh at you

  • This is selfish and ridiculous

  • Worry about that tomorrow

  • You’ve failed before

  • You’re too busy

Your brain is reacting to voices, beliefs and behaviors from your past.

...says you have to rewire your brain for success.

“You are not your failures,” he said recently to our Holosync Brain Club members. “You are not your disappointments.”

You are more than you think you are.

Your brain may not know this, yet. Your brain, with all its genius and all its magic, needs to be told what to do.

Just like a computer spits out data based on input its given, your brain spits out results based on thoughts its given.

It creates whatever you focus on most passionately...consciously or otherwise.

Which is why you’ll get better results if you:

Just Pretend That Never Happened

In other words…bend your thoughts to the good things, the things you want, your dreams and your strengths.

Don’t misunderstand. Denial isn’t your friend. It keeps you in fear, resistance, and resentment. It’s always best to look life squarely in the face. 

As Bill Harris, would say, “Let whatever happens be okay.”

Denying, resisting or otherwise pretending that things aren’t the way they are is counter productive. 

Take courage, and shine a light into the dark corners of your thoughts and feelings. Sweep the dust bunnies out from under the bed. Clear away the cobwebs of your past.

But, beware of dwelling incessantly on the negative. 

It’s one thing to become aware of, and understand, what drives your thoughts, feelings and actions. 

It is another thing entirely to obsess about these things. 

We all have stories to tell, and boy-oh-boy are we going to tell them! Over and over and over, we regale our friends about how somebody “done us wrong.”

For lack of a better metaphor, we “sit” in it…

...stewing, fuming, resenting, and creating a whole lot of energy around it, giving it a life and a momentum of its own.

And what happens when that happens?

YOU ATTRACT MORE OF THE SAME. You’ve just turned your “story” into a HUGE negativity magnet.

As Bill Harris would say:

Focusing on what you don’t want is a bad strategy.

The trick then, is to get off the hamster wheel about how “right” we are, how injured we’ve been, and what so-and-so said or did, or didn’t say or didn’t do.

But how? How to let go of the negative and focus on the positive, instead?

Well, that’s the million dollar question, isn’t it? There are about as many ways to tackle THAT question as there are self-help gurus.

Bill Harris developed a solution, a tried-and-true process, which has helped millions of people all around the world over the past 29 years. He called it:


Observe yourself.

Somewhere between Narcissus–who died admiring his own beautiful reflection–and self deprecation, is a neutral, curious mind.

Witnessing means watching–with curiosity and acceptance–every thought, feeling and sensation you have, including the ones you don’t like.

“If you’re suffering,” said Bill Harris, “you are resisting the way things are.”

Witnessing is the antidote to resistance. It automatically detaches us from the “fight or flight” response.  

The third of Buddhism’s Four Noble Truths states that to put an end to suffering, we need to control our desires or practice non-attachment.

We cannot change the things that happen to us, but we can change our responses.

Witnessing lets us move into an important concept, and the first on Bill’s 9 Principles of Conscious Living, which is:

Let Whatever Happens Be Okay.

When you can truly be okay with whatever is happening, you’re in a state of heightened, centered awareness, and as Bill has said thousands of times:

Awareness creates choice.

And choice creates freedom. With this freedom, you can consciously choose what to believe about yourself, other people and the world around you.

And therefore you find the power to choose your results in life.

Change Your Beliefs; Change Your Results

The most effective way to replace beliefs that do not serve you is to become the Witness...

...to watch, with conscious awareness, the process of how a belief creates the results of your life.

If you believe, deep down inside, that you are unable or unworthy, that people are selfish, that love is elusive…

...then these are the results you will get in life.

When you are able to uncover your negative beliefs, and then witness them in real time, as they are creating your results…

...then you’ve just answered that million dollar question.

Even better: You will automatically let go of your negative beliefs, thoughts and actions, and shift to positive ones. And you’re off the hamster wheel!


Witnessing–this process of watching ourselves with curiosity and acceptance–causes whatever is unresourceful (including our own unhealthy or unresourceful beliefs) to fall away...."

...and whatever is resourceful (good, positive) to remain.

(This sounds like magic, but it’s not. It’s pure science...the pure, powerful science of the brain.)

So, if you’re game to try this, here’s your assignment:

Learn how to watch how your thoughts, feelings and sensations create your beliefs, and how your beliefs create your results of your life...in real time.

Consciously observe the creative process, as it’s happening, from a perspective of curiosity, or non-attachment, as the Buddhists would say.

As you learn to “witness” your thoughts, feelings and actions, as they happen…

...it becomes impossible to create results that do not serve you.

As you become more and more adept at adopting positive, affirming beliefs about yourself, other people, and the world, your life will start changing on its own.

Your magnetic, super-brain, powered by awareness and action, will automatically attract…

...the love, success and peace of mind that you’ve been longing for.

This Really Happened

I see that I’ve traversed miles and miles in a brief amount of time.
