Brain Awareness Week:
As goes your brain, so goes your life

Issue #104 – Monday, March 12, 2018

As this is Brain Awareness Week...

...I’m dedicating this issue of Mind Power to the fascinating transformations that your brain experiences during meditation.

As goes your brain, so goes your whole life. So this is really powerful stuff!

In the feature article below, titled, “Modern Medicine Meets Ancient Wisdom,” I explore scientific research on how meditation increases your awareness…

...and improves your objectivity, concentration, executive function, and overall health & well-being.

In fact, scientific studies are increasingly interested in the effects of mindfulness  on the brain and body and our ability to focus, perform and achieve our goals.

So, in the spirit of Brain Awareness Week, I invite you to go beyond the chaos commonly known as your brain

...to achieve greater control, awareness and choice about how you think, feel and react––every day, every moment, all the time.

Be well,

P.S. One of the most important resources you need in order to be your best is: Sleep.

Even minimal sleep loss can dramatically damage your mood, energy level, efficiency, mental clarity, and your ability to handle stress.

Modern Science Meets Ancient Wisdom

By Bill Harris

I’ve been talking for some time about how meditation increases awareness, and that awareness creates choice.

As this happens, you begin to choose how you feel, how you behave, which people and situations you attract, and what the events of your life mean.

As this happens, everything changes. So let’s take a look at some fascinating research.

Scientists have become quite interested in meditation—especially since Harvard’s Herbert Benson wrote The Relaxation Response in 1975…

...describing changes in metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, and brain chemistry during meditation.

Meditation, he found, increases inner peace and calmness, while reducing reactivity and stress. How?

  • Meditation reduces the activity of the sympathetic nervous system—the source of the famous “fight or flight” response, and…

  • Meditation increases activity in the parasympathetic nervous system—the source of Benson’s “relaxation response.”

Because stress is an immune system depressant, meditation relieves many stress-related physical problems—some of which are deadly.

But meditation’s biggest benefit is that it increases awareness.

Let me describe a few research-based examples:

So, first of all, scientists have found that meditation:

  • Creates “a wider, more flexible attention span,” which they described as making it “easier to be aware of a situation”

  • Makes it easier to be objective in emotionally or morally difficult situations, and finally…

  • Makes it possible to achieve what they described as “responsive, creative awareness”—what they also referred to as a flow state.

A flow state happens when you experience energized focus, full involvement…

...and total enjoyment of whatever you’re doing. You’re completely absorbed.

Remember that this is what happens to you as a result of continued meditation practice. There are six characteristics of a flow state:

  1. Intense and focused concentration on the present moment—clearly a state of enhanced awareness.

  2. A merging of action and awareness. This is what I mean when I say that awareness allows you to have choice about your behavior.

  3. A loss of reflective self-consciousness. This means that you aren’t thinking about thinking, or second-guessing yourself. In fact, when you’re in this state of awareness, you know just what to do…

...it “flows” through you, you might say, without your having to think about it. This is one reason why I’ve said that awareness isn’t the same as “knowing” something. In a flow state—a state of enhanced awareness…

...you’re not acting from knowledge, but from awareness.

  4. You have a sense of personal control or agency over the situation or activity. (This is another way of saying that awareness creates choice.)

  5. You experience a time distortion. You lose track of time because you’re so absorbed. In fact, this is what people call “being in the moment”—a common result of enhanced awareness.

  6. Whatever you’re doing is intrinsically rewarding—it has meaning. The doing, the being there in that situation, has meaning. In a flow state, life has meaning, significance. This is what people who are depressed or feel hopeless lack. They don’t see any meaning in life.

Can you see how cool this is?

And scientists are saying that the more you meditate, the more you experience life from this perspective.

(And, if you’re using Holosync, according to what we’ve observed over the last 28 years, this happens about 8x faster!)

Meditation also increases the thickness of gray matter in your brain—your neurons—in the parts of the brain responsible for attention and sensory processing.

It increases the integrity and efficiency of messages sent between neurons.

How cool is that?

Scientists have found that these same changes allow more effective regulation of blood pressure, and heart rate as well.

But what really blew me away was the discovery that it also allows you to …

...better regulate reward anticipation, decision-making, empathy, impulse control, and emotional control.

Again, these scientists are saying that awareness increases choice! (I love it when I find research that proves something I’ve been saying for years.)

As you can see, mediation isn’t just for basketball players who want to score more points.

Here are some other mind-blowing benefits of mindfulness through meditation:

  • Increased blood flow to areas involved in attention, awareness, calmness, creativity, and compassion

  • Increases your body’s ability to heal itself, while it decreases anxiety, depression, fear, and anger

  • More positive emotions and life satisfaction

  • Allows you see things more objectively

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Increased executive control

  • Enhanced learning ability

The benefits these scientists have described become more profound the more deeply you meditate (and you can increase your meditation results by a factor of 8X with Holosync).

So, please carve out some time for yourself, your peace of mind, your highest, best healthiest self…

...and find out what it’s like to have this kind of super awareness.

The leaps I’ve made these past several weeks have been extraordinary.

Everything seems to be coming together and the awareness that is spoken about is definitely there.
